As of the end of 2024, Germany has achieved a major milestone, reaching 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity, nearly halfway to its 2030 target of 215 GW, according to the German Solar Industry Association. Solar energy accounted for approximately 14% of Germany’s total energy consumption in 2024, up from 12% in 2023, based on data from the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). In 2024, Germany added around 17 GW of new solar capacity, marking a 10% increase from the previous year’s 15.4 GW. Ground-mounted solar installations experienced the largest growth, with a 40% increase, reaching 6.3 GW. Meanwhile, solar systems installed on company rooftops grew by 25%, adding 3.6 GW, and plug-in solar devices, known as "balcony power plants," saw their capacity double, contributing 0.4 GW. However, the growth of solar systems on residential rooftops slowed down to 6.7 GW in 2024. The German Solar Industry Association urged the government to remove market barriers and establish a favorable regulatory environment to encourage further investment in the solar sector. |
