Spain's Solar Power Set to Surpass Wind Energy as Renewable Leader

January 31, 2025

Spain is witnessing a surge in solar power, with expectations that it will soon surpass wind energy as the dominant renewable source in the country's expanding energy sector. Currently, renewable energy accounts for over half of Spain’s total electricity production, with wind power at 22.4% and solar energy at 18.3%, according to industry sources.

The national grid operator, Red Eléctrica de España (REE), has reported that large-scale photovoltaic plants will soon have the highest installed capacity in the country, overtaking wind farms. Ground-based solar installations, excluding rooftop systems, now boast a combined capacity of more than 29,600 megawatts, nearly double the 15,300 megawatts recorded in 2021.

Alvaro Luna, a renewable energy expert from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, praised Spain's solar power capacity, attributing its growth to the country's favorable resource conditions and expanding production. He noted that Spain is a leader among European Union countries in advancing renewable energy.
